Time Machine

The weight of goodbye

We buried Grandma today. She was 94 and she went peacefully, which is what everyone keeps saying as if that makes it easier. It doesn't. I keep expecting to hear her call from the kitchen. I know grief isn't linear. I know it comes in waves. But right now I'm standing in the ocean and I can't see the shore.

Election day

Stood in line for three hours to vote today. The queue stretched around the block and down the street. Old women with umbrellas, young men checking their phones, children running between their parents' legs. A man selling roasted maize walked up and down the line. By the time I reached the front, my feet ached. But I voted. My grandmother never could. Her mother never could. I voted and I felt the weight of every woman who came before me.

Closing time

Locked the door of my bookshop for the last time today. Twenty-two years. The rent tripled. The customers moved online. I held on as long as I could. My regulars came by — some brought flowers, one brought whiskey. We sat among the empty shelves and told stories about the books we'd sold. Morning coffee, morning clarity

The sun came through the kitchen window at exactly the right angle this morning. I sat with my coffee and watched the steam curl upward and disappear. My daughter is starting school next week. She's nervous, but I think she's more ready than she knows. I remember my own first day — the smell of new crayons and the sound of shoes on linoleum. Some things don't change. I want to remember this exact feeling: the quiet before everything shifts.

Six months sober

Six months today. I woke up and the first thought wasn't about a drink. It was about coffee. That might not sound like much but it's everything. My sponsor took me for breakfast. He's been sober eleven years. I asked him when it gets easy. He said 'It doesn't get easy. You get strong.' I wrote that on a Post-it and stuck it on my bathroom mirror.

Power cut, day three

Third day without electricity after the storm. The neighbors and I have been sharing a generator, taking turns charging phones. Mrs. Okafor brought everyone jollof rice cooked on a wood fire. The kids are playing in the street like it's a holiday. There's something almost beautiful about how crisis strips everything back to community. We know each other's names now. Before the storm, I'd lived here two years and never spoken to any of them.

First snow in Tokyo

Insomnia, again

3 AM and I'm wide awake. The apartment is so quiet I can hear the fridge humming. I've been lying here for hours thinking about all the things I should have said and all the things I shouldn't have. My therapist says I need to stop replaying conversations in my head. Easy for her to say. She doesn't have my brain. I got up and made chamomile tea. The city is beautiful at this hour — all the lights on but nobody home. I feel like that sometimes.

Market day

Every Saturday, the same ritual. Wake up at five. Walk to the market in Nairobi's morning fog. Buy fresh mandazi from the woman who remembers my name. She asks about my children. I ask about her grandchildren. We've been doing this for twelve years. Today she gave me an extra mandazi and said 'You look thin.' I'm not thin. But I took it anyway. Desert sunrise

Woke up at 4:30 to catch the sunrise over Wadi Rum. Worth every minute of lost sleep. The rocks turned from grey to pink to gold to red, all in the space of twenty minutes. A Bedouin family was already up, making coffee over a fire. They waved me over. We sat and drank together in silence, watching the sky change. No common language needed. Some experiences are beyond words. This is why I travel — not to see new things, but to remember that the world is bigger than my problems.

Night fishing

Went night fishing with my uncle on the Mekong. No phones, no lights except the stars and the lanterns on the boat. He told me about the fish he used to catch when he was young — fish as big as a man, he says. They're gone now. The river is quieter. We caught three small ones and cooked them on the bank. The best meal I've had in months.

The lighthouse keeper

Day 112 alone at the lighthouse. The supply boat came today — first human contact in three weeks. The captain asked if I was lonely. I told him I wasn't. That's mostly true. I have the sea and the birds and the light. Every evening I climb the 127 steps and switch it on and I know that somewhere out there, someone sees it and feels safer. That's enough meaning for one life.

Monsoon thoughts

The monsoon arrived early this year. I'm sitting on the balcony watching the rain hit the neem tree. Mumbai transforms during the rains — the dust washes away and everything turns impossibly green. My chai is getting cold but I don't care. I've been thinking about my father. He used to say the rain is God's way of telling us to slow down. I've been running too fast lately. Chasing deadlines, promotions, some idea of success that I'm not sure is even mine. The rain doesn't care about any of that.

They want to demolish our school

The council announced they're tearing down our school to build luxury apartments. I went to that school. My parents went to that school. Every kid in this neighborhood has walked through those doors. We're organizing a protest for Saturday. I'm angry — not the hot, burning kind, but the cold kind that makes you want to do something. They keep taking things from communities like ours and calling it progress. Progress for who?

The border

We crossed today. I don't want to say more than that. My daughter is sleeping next to me in a room with clean sheets. She hasn't slept on clean sheets in four months. Tomorrow we register. Tomorrow we start again. Tonight I just want to listen to her breathe.

My son took his first steps today. He's been pulling himself up on the furniture for weeks, wobbling like a tiny drunk person. But today he just... let go. Three steps before he fell on his bum and looked up at me with this expression of pure astonishment. I grabbed my phone to film it but by then the moment was gone. That's parenthood, I think — the best moments happen when you're not ready for them.

First day teaching

Twenty-eight pairs of eyes staring at me. I had lesson plans. I had materials. I had practiced my introduction in the mirror six times. None of it mattered. One girl stayed behind to tell me I was her favourite teacher already. I've been her teacher for forty-five minutes.

The interview

They asked me to design a system on a whiteboard and my hand was shaking. When I left, the recruiter walked me to the elevator and said 'We'll be in touch.' I can't tell if that's good or bad. I sat in a coffee shop for two hours afterwards, too wired to go home, too tired to do anything. Applied for seven jobs this month. This is the first callback.

Marathon training, week 12

Ran eighteen miles today. My longest ever. The last three were ugly — shuffle-walking, talking to myself, bargaining with my legs. But I finished. Collapsed on the grass in the park and lay there staring at the sky, feeling my heartbeat in my teeth. A dog came over and licked my face. Its owner apologized. I said it was the best thing that happened to me all day and I meant it. Four weeks to race day.

Lost my job today. Fifteen years at the same company and they let me go in a ten-minute video call. I sat in the car park for an hour afterwards, just staring at the steering wheel. My wife doesn't know yet. I keep rehearsing how to tell her. The kids need new shoes. The mortgage is due. But underneath the panic there's something else — a tiny, shameful flicker of relief. I hated that job. I've hated it for years.

Recovery day 47

Forty-seven days clean. Went to a meeting this morning. Shared for the first time. My voice was shaking so badly I could barely get the words out. But I said it: I'm an addict and I'm trying. The room was quiet when I finished, then someone started clapping, and then everyone did. I cried in the car afterwards. Not from sadness — from something I don't have a word for. Maybe hope.

Sunrise from 4,000 metres

Altitude sickness hit at three in the morning. Headache like a vice. Nausea. My guide said we could turn back. I said no. We kept climbing in the dark with headlamps bobbing ahead like fallen stars. When the sun came up over Kilimanjaro, I forgot about the pain. The clouds were below us. Below us. I have never felt so small and so alive at the same time.

Two lines

Two pink lines on a plastic stick. I stared at them for so long my vision blurred. I'm thirty-four. I've wanted this for years. So why am I terrified?
